What is MICA?

MICA This is short for Mini Invasive Chevron Akin, a minimally invasive surgical technique for hallux valgus. It is a ‘keyhole’ procedure that involves very little tissue disruption.

Minimally invasive technique for treating hallux valgus

Who is eligible for surgery?

Patients with mild, moderate or severe hallux valgus. The doctor makes the final decision about eligibility during the consultation.

What anaesthesia is used for the operation?

This is regional ankle-block anaesthesia. The patient can walk immediately after surgery. In some cases, spinal anaesthesia is used.

How is the operation performed?

The animation below presents the surgical technique in a simple way. The procedure takes about 40 minutes. After surgery, only three small skin incisions remain.

What does postoperative treatment and rehabilitation involve?

After surgery, the patient receives a special postoperative shoe, worn for 6 weeks – the time required for the bone to heal. The patient may walk immediately after surgery, but should rest during the first 2 weeks and limit walking to what is essential. Dressings are easy to change and the patient does this independently according to instructions. Foot exercises at home are recommended from week 3, followed by work with a physiotherapist from week 6. The patient can return to regular footwear after 6 weeks, swimming and cycling after 8 weeks, and running sports after 12 weeks.

Why MICA?

The advantages of this technique are clear: minimal tissue trauma, small scars, less swelling, a lower risk of postoperative adhesions and consequently better movement of the big-toe joint after surgery, as well as faster recovery.

All details of the operation are explained to the patient during the consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!
