Pedobarography is a foot-assessment test widely used around the world. It is broadly used in the work of the orthopaedist, podiatrist and physiotherapist and others, helping to improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot diseases.
Pedobarography enables precise measurements of pressure (force and load) on every square centimetre of the sole, both while standing and during dynamic walking.
Pedobarography is a test that, alongside radiological, ultrasound and MRI examinations and others, should always be performed before planned foot surgery.
It not only measures pressure on every square centimetre of the foot while standing or walking; by including parameters unavailable in other tests, it enables precise planning of surgical and postoperative treatment. It is also extremely important when selecting orthopaedic insoles.
Besides its obvious usefulness for conditions such as bunions, transverse flatfoot, rheumatoid foot, hammer toes and metatarsalgia, pedobarography is invaluable in treating diabetic foot. It visualises areas at excessive risk of ulceration and helps select conservative treatment (shoes, orthopaedic insoles and other measures) to prevent progression and guide appropriately targeted surgery.
Pedobarography devices have steadily improved in recent years. Today’s devices provide highly accurate measurements and therefore a more precise assessment of the actual condition. In daily practice we use the Novel EMED pedobarograph, a global leader in pedobarography.
